WEBINAR # 5
NUCLEAR WASTE BURIAL AND COMMUNITY CONSENT.
WILLING OR NOT?
Canada's nuclear industry is engaged in a multi-year process to secure a burial location for all of Canada's high level radioactive waste. After a decade of investigation, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization has now shortlisted to two candidate sites, one in each of northwestern and southwestern Ontario. Claiming throughout that their search is for an "informed and willing host", the NWMO has still not defined how "willingness" will be measured, or who makes up the community that can grant consent. This webinar will explore questions around consent and willingness in the context of the very long term challenge of nuclear waste. Who decides? And who decides who the decision-makers are?
Speakers:
John Jackson, Citizens Network on Waste Management, Toxics Free Great Lakes Network
Kerrie Blaise, Northern Services Counsel, Canadian Environmental Law Association
Cassandra Eby , Law student, Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, Lakehead University.
2ND ANNUAL NO DGR PARADE A HUGE SUCCESS!!!
THANK YOU SUPPORTERS!
CONFIDENCE IS HIGH!
WE CAN STOP THE NWMO!
The column of over 100 cars, trucks and farm equipment decorated in yellow and bright NO NUKE DUMP signage snaked for miles through the villages of Teeswater, Formosa, Mildmay and Belmore, with a pass by the current Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) borehole sites. Community members in each village came out to the street to show support for the parade and their opposition to the proposed dump.
MIKWENDAAGOZI MAMA AKI: REMEMBERING MOTHER EARTH WATER WALK

We are forever grateful for the connections and friendships made and for reminding us all of our spiritual connection to Mother Earth and the need to protect and advocate for her and to express thanks for all that she provides us with.
March 25, 2021 - Toronto Star
Frank Greening - retired OPG scientist worried that CNSC is a captured regulator more concerned with looking after the needs of the nuclear industry than the safety of Canadians.
CAN WE TRUST CANADA'S NUCLEAR REGULATOR TO ACT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF CANADIAN'S?
A Captured Regulator? How can we be sure the CNSC will act in the best interests of Canadians regarding DGR selection and project safety.
A growing chorus of investigations has shed light on the hollowing out of Canada's nuclear regulator as it cedes more and more responsibility to the nuclear industry to police itself.
Whose best interests do they serve regarding the DGR? The safety of Canadians, or the NWMO?
Understand how the decisions of the regulator have raised deep concerns about who they really serve.
A SINCERE THANK YOU TO THE CHIEFS OF ONTARIO AND WOLASTOQ NATION OF NEW BRUNSWICK
Protect Our Waterways - No Nuclear Waste would like to convey a sincere thank you to the Chiefs of Ontario and the Wolastoq Grand Council of New Brunswick for their resolutions in February and March of 2021 recognising the dangers of nuclear waste and opposing the establishment of a Deep Geological Repository. We are grateful to hear of their forward thinking resolutions that puts the protection of people, water and land first.

We are dedicated to the protection of water in South Bruce and beyond. Help us keep radioactive waste from threatening our ground water and our river which is a tributary that flows to Lake Huron.
We believe water is essential for life.
This initiative will sponsor public education on the risks that burying nuclear waste poses to water security, to the agricultural heritage and well-being of the community.
The municipality of South Bruce is a potential site to bury highly radioactive fuel bundles from Canada’s reactors underground.

No Nuclear Waste in our communities!
ONE DGR DOWN, ONE MORE TO GO!!!
Click on the link for the latest press release from Protect Our Waterways (POW) - No Nuclear Waste regarding the cancellation of the low/intermediate level DGR for the Bruce Power site.
POW - No Nuclear Waste is grateful to the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) for the community's decisive No vote against the low/intermediate nuclear waste dump in their traditional territory which effectively ended this project.
THE HARD WORK IS NOT OVER!
With the cancellation of the low/intermediate nuclear dump we anticipate the NWMO will seek new and creative means to ensure the high level radioactive waste dump is established in South Bruce.
POW - No Nuclear Waste will continue to mobilize stakeholders with events and information sessions coming soon which will challenge the science and the bias of the NWMO's plan to site the world's most dangerous waste in our community.

WE ARE BUILDING A SIGNIFICANT PUBLIC RECORD OF OPPOSITION. WHICH CANNOT BE DENIED.
WE HAVE LISTENED TO THE NWMO FOR 8 YEARS.
WE ARE INFORMED AND WE ARE NOT A WILLING HOST COMMUNITY FOR HIGHLY RADIOACTIVE NUCLEAR WASTE!
A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT
The proposed nuclear dump would be located directly underneath this beautiful river. A source of stunning beauty, recreation and heritage for our community. Is money and economic development worth so much that we would harm this important gift. Its meandering path to the mighty Saugeen River and the Great Lakes needs our help. Tell South Bruce Council and the NWMO NO Nuke Dump in South Bruce!
BUILDING MOMENTUM AGAINST THE DGR IN SOUTH BRUCE!!!
Status update on the Stop the DGR in South Bruce Petition.
More South Bruce residents have signed the petition against the DGR than voted for our current Mayor in the last Municipal election! When will South Bruce Council recognize the democratic will of residents?
Our organization thanks everyone for their requests for No Nuke Dump signs. They are flying off the shelf! We have had so many requests for signs and we promise we are doing our best to keep up with demand.
Thank you everyone for helping us Paint South Bruce yellow and demonstrating loud and clear to NWMO and South Bruce Council "We are informed and We are NOT a willing host community for nuclear waste".
Also see more updates to our new section under Research - Alternative uses for highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel.
WHO WE ARE
We are Protect Our Waterways - No Nuclear Waste (formerly Nuclear Tanks No Thanks), a concerned group of South Bruce citizens united in a common cause to prevent the establishment of a high level radioactive storage facility in our community known as a Deep Geological Repository (DGR).
We are composed of a wide cross section of South Bruce citizens, from farmers and rural land owners to residents within the villages of Teeswater, Mildmay, Formosa, Belmore, Carlsruhe and Deemerton.
OUR MISSION
To counter the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and its surrogate supporters which in our opinion are not fully informing the citizens of South Bruce on the potential dangers, social stigma and downside risks of hosting this DGR facility in our community.
OUR CORE CONCERNS
We are not against nuclear power. We are against the exploitation of rural communities by the NWMO. The nuclear industry has had 50 years to solve this problem and now they want You to solve it for them. Are the so-called benefits from 40 years of active operations at the dump and 1,000's of radioactive truckloads of waste bound for our community worth the expense of our sustainable agricultural industry, the stigma of being known as Canada's Nuclear Dump and over 10's of thousands of years of highly radioactive waste at our feet?
OUR DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS DENIED?
On May 7th, Mayor of South Bruce, Bob Buckle penned an open letter to the Walkerton Herald Times titled South Bruce addresses concerns over Adaptive Phase Management project.
In this article Mayor Buckle indicates that "All decisions related to the site selection process will be made by municipal council with input from the Community Liaison Committee"
We ask that you keep your promise to the people Mayor Buckle!
Commit to a referendum on this project now!
Don't abandon the democratic process!
Mayor Bob Buckle of South Bruce
The Buckle Promise
In an April 2016 article from the London Free Press, South Bruce Mayor Bob Buckle is quoted:
“This is going to be quite contentious once planning starts to ramp up"
Further Mayor Buckle stated:
“If two years from now, if I re-run for mayor and if I get in, I will insist that we have a referendum. Something as important as this I’m not going to let six people (on council) make that decision.”
Mayor Buckle, we completely agree! The time is now! NWMO has had 6 years to convince the community and they have failed. According to NWMO's own survey from Fall 2019 only 16% of residents are very aware of the project. Commit to a referendum now! Your community is divided. Don't make us suffer through 3 more years.
