NWMO SOUTH BRUCE CLC

In a June 22, 2019 interview with The Star, Mr. Jim Gowland, Chair of the NWMO Community Liaison Committee (CLC) indicated "We've got a pretty good, willing community here".

WE respectfully disagree with Mr. Gowland. There is currently no definition or criteria for what a willing and informed host community is. Further, the NWMO's own Fall 2019 survey of South Bruce suggested only 16% of the community was very aware of the project.

Does that sound like a willing and informed community? WE don't share Mr. Gowland's opinion.

See below excerpts of CLC and South Bruce Community Business Development Minutes.

MINUTES OF NWMO SOUTH BRUCE  CLC AND THE SOUTH BRUCE COMMUNITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (SBCBDA)

Be informed about their discussions on this project. They have been formulating a plan to bring this dump to South Bruce for many years, yet NWMO's own 2019 survey indicates only 16% of the community is very familiar with this project. The minutes below demonstrate extensive planning for this project without appropriate community consultation apart from NWMO influence.

Then an update from Jim Gowland and Andy Keir on the DGR Current Status and Next Steps. Jim touched on his trip to Paris France and visiting the NMWO Facility. Andy spoke on the strategy, readiness, partnership, growth opportunities. Have a game plan, are we going to play or win? 25 billion dollar project. Future project, but it starts now.

Excerpt:

Municipal Report: Mark first congratulated Rhonda, the municipality approved her contract for another year! Talked about Official plan meetings, importance of feedback from community, funding from NWMO for community well being. Site will be picked in the next five years. Jim said more meetings are required to enhance information. Mark noted that February will be the next community meeting. Adam suggested an advocacy group re: DGR in our community, promotion rather than information now. Mark suggested a sub group of people that would include people from chamber, business association and municipality. Dave wondered how to convince people? Jim said it was up to NWMO to convince people. As elections are coming up it’s up to the community leaders to give recognition and they should make an electorate mandate to make decisions. Leanne, noted that municipality meetings give a sense of municipality feelings. Mark said that 90 percent of municipality have a say in the decision. Adam said an advocacy group would be a guiding force. Jim said the process is established, that the elected should move things from there, with dialogue. Leanne agreed that advocacy is good and this group is great to promote and share information. Dale said education is needed as 90 percent are not informed. Mark noted that neighboring communities will benefit from the project, it’s huge. Adam said that South Bruce should be involved if not the community then as a sub community. Action is needed, move discussions to another table, including kitchen tables. Jim reiterated it’s the biggest project this area will ever see, we have to have confidence in the system. Adam suggested to meet before the next meeting to discuss further, Adam, Dave and Jim to attend.

Excerpt:

Adam made a motion- SBCBA drafts a letter to Minister of Energy showing our support for nuclear power and continued support for Bruce Power. Les made a motion to accept this motion and Kathy seconded it, all in favour. NWMO discussion Andy brought up about municipality to shift gears , get some grassroots support and educate the population but go slow, business groups to support the process, public support. Bore hole drilling has been announced now. Municipality of South Bruce Council is in full support, remember elections in 2 years coming up. It was discussed that maybe Jim Gowland could give a open presentation to all members at the Feb. annual meeting. This would have to be approved by NWMO first before we could go ahead with this idea.

Not supportive of other forms of electricity production.

A discussion was held on the upcoming Annual General Meeting. Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is holding an Open House in Formosa. Jim contacted them and they are willing to host the SBCBA Meeting on February 19 and will give a private presentation to those in attendance.
